Sam Alajiki Shines At FIBA European Championships
BERKELEY – California men's basketball rising sophomore Sam Alajiki impressed while representing his native country of Ireland at the 2022 U-20 FIBA European Championships on July 15-24 in Tbilisi, Georgia. The 19-year-old forward averaged 13 points and six rebounds while helping lead Ireland to a 5-1 record and a ninth-place finish in the tournament.
Alajiki, who hails from Dundalk, Ireland, was one of 12 Irishmen selected to play in the B division of the tournament. He scored double figures in five of Ireland's six games, including 15-plus in each of the first three games played during the tournament's group phase. After putting up 15 points in Ireland's tournament-opening win over Hungary, Alajiki followed up with 18 points in a loss to Latvia and 19 points in a bounce-back victory against Bulgaria.
In his lone game without double-figure points, Alajiki pulled down 12 rebounds in a decisive win against Albania.
As a freshman for Cal in 2021-22, Alajiki averaged 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds on the way to becoming the first Golden Bear to earn Pac-12 All-Freshman Team (honorable mention) accolades since 2015-16.
