Three Bears Medal At U23 World Championships
VARESE, Italy – The U-23 and U-19 Junior World Championships came to an end on Sunday and the final day featured several members of the Cal men's rowing team. Three Golden Bears took home medals with nine athletes in total making strong contributions to their respective countries.
Cal rowers earning medals were Campbell Crouch, Angus Dawson, and Jamie Arnold, while Frederik Breuer and Leonard Brahms just missed the podium in a very tight race, finishing fourth.
"I'm thrilled that we had such a large contingent of Cal oarsmen racing at the U23 and U19 World Championships; they all represented their countries and the Cal Golden Bears very well," said head coach Scott Frandsen. "It is a great sign of where our program is headed and I'm excited for Campbell, Angus, and Jamie to be leading the charge with medals in the 4- and 8+."
Crouch, the junior from Waikato, New Zealand, helped the Kiwis win silver in the coxless four. New Zealand took on boats from Australia, Romania, Great Britain, Italy, and Ireland in the Grand Final. Crouch rowed in the third seat, helping his team finish with a time of 6:05.86 well ahead of third place Ireland.
In the men's eight Angus Dawson and Jamie Arnold won bronze for Australia in a tight Grand Final that featured Great Britain, United States, Poland, Germany, and Romania. In a blazing final 500 meters, the Aussies took third finishing with a time of 5:54.90 just behind top finishers Great Britain and the United States. Dawson sat in the six-seat with Arnold in the bow for Australia.
In the coxed four Grand Final, Cal's duo of Breuer and Brahams narrowly missed out on a medal when Germany finished fourth with a time of 6:09.46. Germany raced a terrific final 500 meters coming back from sixth to almost capture bronze. Breuer rowed in the stroke seat with Brahms in the two-seat.
