Tupuola-Fetui Named To Bednarik Watch List

Aug 2, 2022

Washington's Zion Tupuola-Fetui has been named to the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced this week.

Tupuola-Fetui, a junior from Pearl City, Hawai'i, was earlier this year named to Walter Camp's preseason All-America first team. The edge outside linebacker was a first-team All-Pac-12 and second-team All-America selection after the shortened 2020 season, when he led the nation in sacks per game. In 2021, he played in the last five games of the season after returning from an offseason injury.

The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented to the college defensive player of the year since 1994 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, an All American at Pennsylvania and an All Pro linebacker and center for the Philadelphia Eagles. Bednarik was the last player to be a two-way player on a full-time basis in the NFL and is a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.

Semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced Nov. 1, 2022, while the three finalists for the award will be unveiled on November 22. The winner of the 28th Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show, on December 8. The formal presentation of the Bednarik Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards live from Atlantic City, NJ, March 10, 2023.
