TYLER, TEXAS – UCLA receiver Kam Brown, a native of Colleyville, Texas, was named Tuesday to the tenth annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List which was announced at the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler Annual East Texas Kick-off Luncheon. The award is presented annually to the outstanding Division I college offensive player who either was born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year school.
Brown, who attended Colleyville Heritage HS, appeared in all 12 games for the Bruins in 2021 and made eight starts in his first season on the field following his transfer from Texas A&M. He made a season-high five catches for 111 yards and a touchdown in a game against Fresno State. Brown totaled three catches each in Pac-12 Conference contests at Washington, versus Oregon and at USC. For the year, Brown averaged 14.5 yards per catch on his 17 receptions.
In addition to standing out on the field of play, the winner of the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award must also exhibit the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell, including integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, community and tenacity. The award is presented by SPORTyler, Inc., in conjunction with the City of Tyler, the Tyler Convention & Visitors Bureau and Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce. The non-profit helps to encourage student-athletes to succeed both on and off the field.
Each week during the season, an Earl Campbell Tyler Rose National Player of the Week will be selected leading up to the announcement of finalists in December. The selection committee is comprised of Texas-based journalists and college football dignitaries and each of the past winners. The committee will narrow the field to up to 16 semifinalists in November, and up to five finalists in December. The recipient of the award will be announced in January of 2023. The 2022 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recipient and finalists will be recognized at the gala announcement to be held January 11, 2023 in Tyler. The winner will receive a unique trophy sculpted by noted artist Ken Bjorge. The winner's name will be permanently added to the base of the original trophy which is on display in Tyler.
The Bruins open the 2022 season with three straight non-conference home contests in Pasadena. The campaign begins on Sept. 3 against Bowling Green at Rose Bowl Stadium in a 11:30 a.m. PT kickoff that airs on Pac-12 Network. A Sept. 10 visit by Alabama State follows, with the Pac-12 Network-televised matchup slated for a 2 p.m. start. Pac-12 Network provides coverage of the Sept. 17 battle with South Alabama, beginning at 11 a.m. The Bruin's home slate also includes Pac-12 Conference home contests against Washington (Sept. 30), Utah (Oct. 8), Stanford (Oct. 29) Arizona (Nov. 12) and USC (Nov. 19).
