Cal Trio Prepared For European Championships

Aug 9, 2022
Cal's Björn Seeliger (pictured) is one of three Golden Bears who will swim at the 2022 European Aquatics Championships, which start Thursday, Aug. 11 in Rome.

BERKELEY – California's Björn Seeliger and Robin Hanson will swim for Sweden while Sebastian Somerset competes for Great Britain at the 2022 European Aquatics Championships, held on Aug. 11-17 at Parco Del Foro Italico in Rome.

Seeliger and Hanson are both entered in three individual events; Seeliger will compete in the 50-meter freestyle, 100m free and 50m backstroke while Hanson will swim in the 100m free, 200m free and 400m free. Somerset is entered in the 50m back and 100m back.

With Rome nine hours ahead of Berkeley, morning sessions will start at 12 a.m. PT and afternoon sessions will begin at 9 a.m. PT. The full event schedule for the European Aquatics Championships can be viewed here.

Seeliger and Hanson represented Sweden at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last summer and went on to have standout performances throughout the 2021-22 collegiate season, helping Cal clinch the 2022 NCAA team title. Hanson also competed at the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest earlier this summer. Seeliger solidified himself as one of the NCAA's premier short-course sprinters as a sophomore, scoring 45 individual points at NCAAs along with winning his third relay title in the 400-yard medley relay. He became the second-fastest NCAA swimmer all-time in the 50-yard free, clocking 18.27 on the leadoff leg of Cal's 200-yard free relay. Hanson was an All-American in two events, the 200-yard free and the 800-yard free relay.

Somerset, a two-time NCAA qualifier for the Bears, scored 21 points at the Pac-12 Championships for Cal earlier this spring. He owns the 10th-fastest 100-yard back and 200-yard back times in school history.
