Oregon State and Washington voted 2022 Pac-12 Men’s Soccer co-favorites

Aug 16, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO - OREGON STATE and WASHINGTON, the nation's top two overall seeds in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, are the coaches' preseason co-favorites in the coming 2022 Pac-12 Men's Soccer season. Both teams totaled 21 points. The Beavers, which won their first Pac-12 Championship a season ago, received two first-place votes, while the Huskies, last season's runner-up, earned one.

Fittingly, the two teams are both highly ranked in United Soccer Coaches preseason national poll with Washington at No. 3 and Oregon State at No. 5. It’s the first time the Pac-12 has had two preseason top-5 teams since 2003, when UCLA opened at No. 1 and STANFORD was No. 3. In 2021, the Pac-12 rated as the nation's No. 1 conference in the NCAA RPI.

It's the Beavers' best appearance in the Conference's preseason poll. They had been third in each of the previous three seasons. Washington is atop the poll for the third time (2020, 2001). The preseason favorite has gone on to win the league title eight times in the 22 seasons of Pac-12 Men's Soccer, but not since 2018 (Stanford).

UCLA, which checks in at No. 23 in the United Soccer Coaches rankings, garnered two first-place votes as part of its 18 points to slot in third. The Bruins are coming off their best Pac-12 finish since 2015 (third), which earned them an at-large bid to secure their 46th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, tied for the second-most in history.

The Cardinal collected the remaining first-place vote and are fourth with 14 points. It's the first time the Conference's available first-place votes have been shared by four teams. Three teams have received first-place votes in the preseason poll nine times, most recently in 2020.

SAN DIEGO STATE (10 points) and CALIFORNIA (6 points) rounded out the poll.

The 2022 season kicks off with nonconference play beginning Thursday, Aug. 25, followed by Pac-12 action starting on Thursday, Sept. 15. Currently, 36 matches are set for broadcast on Pac-12 Networks with additional matches to air on Pac-12 Insider, the free broadband streaming channel from Pac-12 Network. More fall sports broadcast information can be found here.

The following are the results of the preseason coaches’ poll. Five points are awarded for a first-place vote, four points for a second-place vote, three for a third-place vote, etc. First-place votes are in parentheses. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams.
