Martinez's Brace Leads Beavers over Cowgirls

Aug 21, 2022

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- After struggling to find the back of the net in the season opener, the Beavers did not have that issue on Sunday as they chalked a 4-1 win over Wyoming at Paul Lorenz Field. McKenna Martinez led a high-powered Oregon State offense with a pair of goals to dictate the tempo. After it was all said and done, the Beavers outshot the Cowgirls by a 21-7 margin, including seven on frame to Wyoming's three.

"I'm very happy with our performance today," said head coach Lauren Sinacola. "I believe our team bounced back very well after a frustrating outcome on Thursday. We wanted to start strong and fast and I felt we did that at the beginning of both halves. I'm excited that we get to have another week where we will clean up a few things and focus on our first road trip to Fresno and Pacific."

Wasting little time after kick off, Ava Benedetti open the match's scoring with an unassisted strike to give the home side an early 1-0 advantage in just the fourth minute. Amber Jackson later connected with Martinez to double the lead just 16 minutes into the match.

Converting a penalty kick, Wyoming showed signs of life down 2-1 just before half at the 40th minute to take some momentum into the break.

The Cowgirls' momentum was short lived - Martinez found the back of the net off a beautiful dish from Maddie Tetz as Oregon State reclaimed its two-goal cushion - after just 11 ticks off the clock. After a solid thirty-plus minutes of attacking play, Sawyer Service fed Amber Jackson a ball that would be the fourth and final goal for the Beavers at the 76:09 mark.

A trio of Beavers - Martinez, Benedetti and Jackson - registered at least three shots. Martinez's two shots on frame were her scores.

In net, Hailey Coll stopped a pair of shots from the Cowgirls in the match's entirety.

Up next for the Beavers is the first road swing of the season - where Oregon State will face Fresno State and Pacific this upcoming weekend. Thursday's match with the Bulldogs is slated for 7 p.m.
