Bears Open Fall Slate At Fighting Irish Classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The California men's golf team will get its 2022 fall season underway at Warren Golf Course this weekend when it takes part in the Fighting Irish Classic, hosted by Notre Dame. The 54-hole, two-day event will feature 15 teams and will start Sunday and run through Monday.
 
The Golden Bears, led by seventh-year Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf, Walter Chun, will tee off starting at 5:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. ET Sunday with Kent State and Pac-12 counterpart Colorado.

1 – Jeewon Park (Jr., Busan, South Korea)
Transferred to Cal ahead of his junior year following two seasons played at Arizona State … Played in two stroke-play events in 2021-22 with the Sun Devils, including at the Dove Mountain Intercollegiate where he tied for fourth (82-70-70 – 222, +6) … Three-time Korean National Team player in 2014, '16 and '17.
 
2 – Sampson Zheng (Jr., Nagoya, Japan)
An All-Pac-12 Team honorable mention in 2021-22 … Averaged 71.84 strokes per round as a sophomore last season, ranking second on the team … Posted five top-25 finishes in 2021-22, including a career-best third-place showing at The Goodwin (66-66-67 – 199, -11) … Tied for 10th at the Pac-12 Championship (71-73-73-69 – 286, +2) … Averaged 73.74 strokes per round across six events played as a freshman.
 
3 – Aaron Du (Jr., Beijing, China)
Two-time All-Pac-12 Team honorable mention (2021-22, 2020-21) … Led Cal with a season scoring average of 71.76 last season … Won the 2022 John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawaii for his first collegiate title (66-67-70 – 203, -13) … Posted five consecutive rounds – and seven out of nine – in the 60s between the Arizona Intercollegiate, the John Burns Intercollegiate & the Cabo Collegiate last season … Tied for 10th at the 2022 Pac-12 Championship (72-71-70-73 - 286, +2) … Impressed as a rookie in 2020-21, earning a spot on the Pac-12 All-Newcomer Team while averaging 73.32 strokes per round.
 
4 – Costas Panay ­­­(R-Jr., Redmond, Wash.)
Entering his fourth year with the Golden Bears after seeing an increased role in 2021-22 … Played in six stroke-play events and 18 total rounds last year and averaged 73.50 strokes per round … Best 54-hole score was a five-over 205 (70-65-70) at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in fall 2021.
 
5 – Ethan Chung (R-So., Eastvale, Calif.)
Competed in nine tournaments (28 rounds) and averaged 73 strokes per round in his first season with the Bears last year … Transferred to Cal after redshirting during his freshman year at USC … Shot in the 60s in six rounds during 2021-22, including a first-round 69 at the Pac-12 Championship … Tied for eighth at the 2022 Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout as an individual after shooting a five-under 211 (71-68-72).
