Arteaga Scores Twice As Bears Defeat Bellarmine
BERKELEY – The Cal women's field hockey team got its first win of the season in the 2022 home opener, defeating visiting Bellarmine 4-1 on Friday night at Underhill Field.
Cal (1-2) got a pair of goals from Monica Arteaga, the first coming with 5:14 to play in the opening quarter. She doubled up late in the third off the assist from Rachel Buttinger who had another solid performance. Sabine Hommes scored her first collegiate goal midway through the second quarter which stood up as the game-winning goal.
Bellarmine (0-3) finished the night with just seven shots, the fewest shots allowed by the Bear's defense through three contests. In a late flurry just before intermission BU's Isabel Glady's got the better of the Bears' defense for the only goal of the contest by Bellarmine.
The Bears entered Friday night without a goal in the first half, they did not have to wait long tonight. Just five minutes into the contest Arteaga scored the game's opener on Cal's second corner. The Bears had nine corners on the evening and scored on two of them.
Early in the second quarter Hommes took the feed from Olivia Sharratt and slipped her shot in the top right corner of the net past BU's keeper Kailey Workman.
The Knights took the momentum into the intermission with a pair of corners late in the period, the second resulted in a goal by Glady's who took the feed from Julia Doornebos and slipped it past Knipping.
The Bears put the game away midway through the third period when Buttinger took the feed from Jane Onners for her first goal of the season. Arteaga notched her second goal eight minutes later to give the Bears the comfortable win.
In the net, Cato Knipping had a strong evening finishing with three saves in the win.
Offensively, the Bears tallied a season-high four goals on 14 shots. Four coming from Kiki de Bruijne, three from Sara Stone, and two each from Arteaga and Luzi Persiehl.
Cal returns to Underhill Field on Sunday, Sep. 4 when they host Indiana. Sunday's game is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. The game between the Bears and Hoosiers will feature live stats and video.
