No. 25 USC Women's Volleyball Falls to No. 17 Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. – The 25th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (4-1) dropped a four-set decision (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17) to No. 17-ranked tournament host Creighton (4-0) in the Bluejay Invitational at D.J. Sokol Arena on Friday, Sept. 2.
 
KEY PLAYERS

  • Sr. OH Skylar Fields put up her second-career double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs to go with a service ace.
  • So. setter Mia Tuaniga posted 46 assists with five digs, two kills, three blocks, and a service ace.
  • Sr. OPP Emilia Weske notched 11 kills to go with four blocks and a pair of service aces.
  • Fr. OH Jordan Wilson led the Trojans' attack with 12 kills and added five digs.
  • Fr. LIB Gala Trubint put up 16 digs and scored on a pair of service aces.
  • Jr. MB Lindsey Miller had eight kills without an error on 15 swings to hit .533 and added four blocks (one solo).
  • For the Bluejays, Keeley Davis led all players with 16 kills and had eight digs, three blocks, and three service aces. Kendra Wait served a pair of aces and had 12 digs to go with her 32 assists for the double-double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Bluejays used a 6-1 run to win a back-and-forth first set, 25-21, despite the Trojans leading by two at 18-16 and 20-19. Davis had eight of her kills in the opening frame. Miller led USC with four kills.
  • Creighton led the second set by six, 12-6, in a flash and pushed its lead to as many as eight at 16-8. The Trojans used a 7-2 run to close to within three at 18-15, but the Bluejays scored the next five in a row to take a 24-17 lead. USC's last gasp brought the Trojans within three at 24-21, but Creighton claimed a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 win. 
  • The teams traded blows in the third, but the Trojans went in front by four at 16-12 thanks to a 6-1 run. Creighton responded with a 7-1 run to claim a two-point led at 21-19, but USC flipped the script once more and scored the last four in a row for a 25-23 win. The score was tied 11 times, but Wilson came through with six of her kills in the win.
  • USC led early in the fourth, but Creighton used a couple of big runs to pull in front by five several times and led by as many as 10 (24-14). USC saved three match points, but it was too much to overcome as the Bluejays closed out at 25-17 win for the match. Davis returned in the fourth to lead Creighton with five kills while the Bluejays logged five service aces. 

UP NEXT

  • USC closes the Bluejay Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 3) with a meeting against No. 16-ranked Kentucky (2-1) at 5 p.m. CT (3 p.m. PT). The match will be shown live on FloVolleyball.tv. 

MATCH NOTES

  • USC fell to 6-3 all-time against Creighton and has lost the last three meetings with the Bluejays.
  • The Trojans had a four-match winning streak snapped.
  • The Women of Troy fell to 6-5 all-time in the state of Nebraska with a 2-5 record in the city of Omaha.
