Cross Country Men and Women Place Second to Open Season
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The 2022 cross country season began with the men's and women's teams finishing second at the George Kyte Invitational on Saturday in Flagstaff.
"We had a great performance this afternoon," said head cross country coach Bernard Lagat, who praised the freshman newcomers and returning runners. "The returners, they showed up. They took the new athletes, the freshmen, under their wings and they ran together as a team." Coach Lagat said, "The freshmen came in, settled in together, and performed great this afternoon."
The men's team was led by freshman Cooper Quigley in the 4.5-mile, who ran a 23:35.7 to place 19th overall. The Wildcats also rounded out the top 25 with freshmen Noah Jodon (23:46.6), Ian Sanchez Lopez (23:49.2), and Iker Sanchez Lopez (24:04.8) placing 23rd, 24th, and 25th.
For the women's team, junior Grace Driskill was Arizona's top finisher in the 2.5-mile, placing 12th overall with a PR time of 16:00.4. Driskill was followed by Sailor Hutton who finished 13th, running a time of 16:13.3. Three other Wildcats had top-20 finishes: Mia Chavez (16:23.5) in 15th, Brigid Hanley (16:29.4) in 19th, and Alisa Lyesina (16:33.0) in 20th.
The women's squad finished with a score of 64 and the men's side ended with a score of 89, helping both teams secure second place overall.
"We have one strong team for both men and women that are looking forward to the season ahead of us," said Coach Lagat.
