Cardinal Cruises Past Mustangs

Sep 4, 2022

STANFORD, Calif. – Four different Cardinal players scored a goal as No. 12 Stanford (5-0-0) cruised to a 4-1 victory over Cal Poly (2-3-0) on Sunday afternoon from Cagan Stadium.

Stanford peppered the Mustang goal with shots, delivering a season-high 38 and forcing Cal Poly goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel into 13 saves. The 38 shots are the most for the Cardinal since posting 44 in a 6-0 victory over San Diego State on August 29, 2021.

Senior Maya Doms led the attack with nine shots, including four on goal, while 15 different Cardinal managed at least one chance.

Abby Greubel got the scoring started in the 12th minute when she received a pass from Doms and chipped a shot over Samuel's head and into the top corner of the net for her second of the season. The goal was the 14th of Greubel's career.

The Cardinal added to the lead in the 41st minute when freshman centerback Elise Evans came forward for a corner kick and stayed in the box as the corner was initially cleared from danger. Senior Katie Duong was at the top of the 18 and promptly re-inserted the ball in the box where it found Evans' head and she flicked the ball backward into the corner of the net for her first career goal.

Stanford managed 21 shots, forcing Samuel into nine saves, in the first half while holding Cal Poly without a shot through the first 45 minutes.

The offensive pressure continued into the second half as freshman Jasmine Aikey dribbled into the box in the 61st minute only to be taken down and awarded a penalty kick. Doms stepped to the spot and promptly buried the chance into the back of the net to extend the Cardinal lead to 3-0. For Doms, the goal was the second of the season and 19th of her career.

Less than 10 minutes later, the Cardinal was once again celebrating, this time as Catherine Paulson collected her first goal of the season. For Paulson, the goal in the 70th minute was the second of her career. Sophomore Nya Harrison was credited with the assist as she sent a long ball into the center of the box where Paulson settled with one touch before firing the shot past Samuel for the goal.

Making the most of seemingly its only chance on the afternoon, Cal Poly got a goal from Madison Demijohn in the 86th minute. McKenna Carbon played a ball through Stanford's back line where Demijohn ran unmarked toward Ryan Campbell in goal. Campbell got a piece of the initial effort, but Demijohn's momentum carried the ball into the goal for her first of the season and broke up the shutout bid.

The goal came on the second and final shot from the Mustangs.

Stanford will now prepare to travel to Illinois where it will meet Northwestern on Thursday at 5 p.m. PT before clashing with DePaul on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT.
