Sep 6, 2022

TEMPE-  Sun Devil Cross Country is ready to get the year going. ASU is scheduled to go to five events this season, with the first meet of the year kicking off September 17 in Riverside, California. ASU returns a roster that features nine NCAA XC regional qualifiers from the 2021 season, including a first-time outdoor track All-American in Dayton Carlson. Ryun Godfrey has taken the helm of the cross country and distance programs, and he's joined by assistant coach Ryan Ray and volunteer assistant coach Tanner Brown.

Coach Godfrey came to ASU in July after eight years at Kansas State. His resumé includes over 30 conference titles and more than 20 program records, and he's overseen more than 40 All-America honors between Division I and Division II. Ray spent the 2020-21 season as a volunteer coach with ASU before going down south to coach for The University of Arizona for the 2021-22 season. Ray was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for both cross country and track last year. In his lone season he coached Grace Driskill to a school record in the 3000S and recruited one the best classes in the nation, signing several student-athletes ranked in the national top-10, top-20 and top-50.

Other top returners for the Sun Devils include Vincent Mauri and Léna Lebrun. Mauri took 39th at the NCAA XC Regionals last year before running to a 5K personal record of 13:39.13 at the NCAA Outdoor West Prelims. Lebrun led the ASU women with a 66th place NCAA XC Regional finish and went on to run PRs in both the 5K (17:07.74) and 3000S (10:10.56) at the Pac-12 Outdoor Championships.
