Team USA Greco Roman Preview
Unseeded Schultz, who wrestles for Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club when on international duty, is one of seven Sunkist wrestlers heading to Serbia. He's also one of six USA Greco-Roman grapplers returning to the championships after showing face at the 2021 World Championships. Sunkist wrestlers heading to Worlds include: Benji Peak (72 kg GR), Braxton Amos (97 kg GR), Seth Gross (61 kg FS) Jordan Burroughs (79 kg FS), Dom Parrish (53 kg WF), Helen Maroulis (57 kg WF) and Kayla Miracle (62 kg WF).
A Sun Devil hasn't medaled at the Senior Worlds since John Hughes' 69 kg bronze finish in 2008. Current ASU head coach Zeke Jones is the only Sun Devil to ever win his Senior Worlds weight class (1991, 52 kg).
Schultz was eliminated in the first round of the 2021 World Championships after a 5-3 loss to Iakobi Kajaia (Georgia). He'll open this year's tournament against David Ovasapyan (Armenia). Ovasapyan took silver at the 2021 U23 World Championships, bronze at the 2019 U23 World Championships and silver at the. 2018 U20 World Championships. FloWrestling calls Schultz a medal contender, and fans should "take his candidacy seriously."
"In the past, one would have said that Schultz "is almost near" this level. He has now arrived. Schultz has always had the competitive maturity for Senior. He has now added the necessary layers of nuance to his skill-set. Schultz observes sound position and feels his way into off-balances and attempts. He never forces, never rushes. Turning other elite heavyweights is a challenge, but that's the case for nearly all of them. From bottom, he can float locks like a lightweight. Take his candidacy seriously." - FloWrestling, Sept. 7
Schultz has had a year to remember. He finished as the national heavyweight runner-up to Gable Steveson at the NCAA Championships in March after going 22-0 in the runup. Schultz then swept the US Open and World Team Trials en route to making his second consecutive Senior World Team. Schultz is just the second Sun Devil to make it to two Greco-Roman SWC, following Dan Henderson (1994, 1997). Schultz is no stranger to the international stage, having been to three U20 World Championships and claiming medals at two of them (bronze 2018, silver 2019).
