ASU Finishes Strong on Day 1 of Maui Jim Intercollegiate
Scottsdale, Ariz. – Arizona State Men's Golf used a strong back-9 to finish 9-under par and 6th in the 18-team field on day one of the 2022 Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club Friday afternoon.
ASU was paced by Ryggs Johnston and Preston Summerhays at 3-under 67. The veterans finished in a tie for 20th individually in the 90-player field.
"I really love this round," Head Coach Matt Thurmond said. "We competed and live to see tomorrow. It's not where we want to be but I thought we battled."
In his collegiate debut, Luke Potter led the Sun Devils with seven birdies to just one bogey, including four of the last five holes. The effort aided ASU in tying for the lead on par-3's at four-under par. Four different Sun Devils birded on par-3 holes.
"My mentality at the end was 'all gas, no breaks,'" Potter said. "I knew I had the ability to get to around 3-under par and I'm happy with how the round ended."
ASU is back in action for day two of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club tomorrow, with the first group teeing off at 8:50 a.m. on the 10th hole.
