Sep 9, 2022

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Behind low scores from junior Sam Sommerhauser and senior Chaz Aurilia, Arizona Men's Golf finished its opening round of the 2022-23 season at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in eighth place at 7-under par. Sommerhauser shot a 6-under round of 64 on Friday to finish in a tie for fourth among all players. Aurilia's round of 65 was a career low and put him in a tie for seventh on the individual leaderboards.

"We started things off a little slow, but I was encouraged by our lineup's better scores after the turn today," said head coach Jim Anderson. "Hats off to Sam and Chaz for their bogey-free rounds that really set the tone for us today. With a couple of small adjustments, I believe we will card better rounds on Saturday."

The Arizona scorecard was 11-strokes better on the front nine holes of Mirabel Golf Club on Friday. Powered by clean scorecards by Sommerhauser and Aurilia, the Wildcats finished the opening round with the third most par's out of the 18-team field.

Sitting in eighth place out of 18 teams, Arizona is part of a crowded middle of the leaderboard that has nine teams separated by a total of six strokes. The Wildcats will tee off at 9:40 a.m. (MST) on Saturday alongside Clemson and Florida State.
