Devils Fall To No. 15 Bears

WACO, Texas – Sun Devil Volleyball wrapped up the Baylor Invitational on Saturday with a setback to the host team No. 15 Baylor, falling in three sets (25-16, 25-23, 25-17). 

Notable Stats

  • Arizona State (5-4) fell in straight sets at No. 15 Baylor (5-2) to wrap up the tournament. The Sun Devils are now 0-2 against ranked teams this season.
  • Sophomore libero Jaden Ravnsborg wrapped up her solid weekend with a team-high 12 digs. Her efforts over the weekend gave her a place on the Baylor Invitational All-Tournament Team. She has earned double-digit digs in all but one match this season. 
  • The Sun Devil offense struggled against the Bears, with ASU earning under half the number of total kills as the home team. Outside hitters Iman Isanovic and Geli Cyr led the way with 10 and nine kills, respectively. 
  • For the setters, senior Shannon Shield led the team with 14 assists and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season

Set One: Baylor 25, ASU 16
A run of four, attributed to three-straight attacking errors by the Bears, gave the Sun Devils the early lead, with two more Baylor errors giving ASU a 7-5 lead. Even at 11, the Bears made a jump, notching the next six points. Cyr's kill put the set within four, but Baylor would go on a 6-1 run to close out the set.

Set Two: Baylor 25, ASU 23
The Sun Devils took the early 3-0 lead to open the second set. From there it was back and forth with six ties before the Bears pulled away with a 6-1 run to make it 14-10. A timeout ordered by ASU helped, as Cyr and Leah Miller returned with a kill each to help get within two at 18-16. The Sun Devils continued to threaten, splitting the final 14 points, evenly with the Bears, but the Bears saw the set through.

Set Three: Baylor 25, ASU 17
Falling behind 7-1, the Sun Devils took an early timeout. ASU's main push came on a 4-0 run with Cyr serving to make it a 9-7 deficit. The Sun Devils took their second timeout after Baylor's 4-0 run, in which Marta Levinska answered with a kill to trail 13-8. ASU was unable to spark a run down the stretch and Baylor would take the final set off of two kills.

The final non-conference tournament is next weekend as Arizona State returns to Texas to compete in the Red Raider Classic at Texas Tech from September 16-17.
