Bears To Face Notre Dame In Inaugural Citi Shamrock Classic
BERKELEY – The Cal women's basketball team announced Thursday a matchup against Notre Dame in the inaugural Citi Shamrock Classic, which will take place on Saturday, November 12 at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
The game will air live on NBC and Peacock, marking the first women's college basketball broadcast for the networks. The Citi Shamrock Classic will be part of a weekend of basketball and thought leadership conversations on gender equity and women's athletics, while celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX. The day before the game, there will be a luncheon and panel discussion featuring marquee speakers from the realm of business and sports focused on elevating women's athletics, examining the reasons for underrepresentation of women in business and sports, and ideas on how to mentor young women to realize the significance of Title IX and gender equity across all of society.
The game will be a homecoming for Cal head coach Charmin Smith, who grew up in St. Louis and played at Ladue Horton Watkins High School. Notre Dame head coach Niele Ivey is also a native of St. Louis and won a state championship at Cor Jesu Academy before playing for the Fighting Irish and winning the 2001 NCAA Championship in her home city.
"A huge thank you to Citibank and NBC for leading the way and highlighting the representation of women in sport and business through the Citi Shamrock Classic," Smith said. "Personally, this is a special opportunity for me, as this is my first time competing in St. Louis as a player or coach since I left for college nearly 30 years ago. My club days in St. Louis are some of my fondest basketball memories and it will be great to experience this return with Niele. I'm so happy for her success as a player at Notre Dame and now as the head coach. This is where it all started for both of us and it's an honor to have Cal participate in the inaugural year of the classic."
"This is a full circle moment to come back home to St. Louis where my basketball journey began," Ivey said. It's an overwhelming feeling to think about the positive impact this will have in my community and for our sport. I hope to continue to inspire and empower the next generation of young leaders and athletes."
The Bears return three full-time starters, led by reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Jayda Curry, and added Utah transfer and two-time All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention honoree, Kemery Martin, this past offseason.
This will mark the third all-time meeting between the two teams with both previous matchups taking place in the NCAA Tournament. Notre Dame defeated Cal in the second round in 2012 and in the first round in 2007.
Game tickets for the Citi Shamrock Classic will go on sale Friday, Sept. 23, at www.enterprisecenter.com/shamrock.
