Cal Dominates In The Desert
LAS VEGAS – California women's soccer continued their unbeaten streak with a 2-0 win over UNLV on Thursday evening at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The Bears received a first-half goal from Mia Fontana and a second-half header by Ari Manrique to post the win over the Rebels. Cal has not lost since the first game of the season and is now on a seven-match unbeaten streak. Cal also collected a shutout for the third consecutive game and have not allowed a goal in the past 284:40 of game time.
Cal (4-1-3) dominated possession and the opportunities throughout Thursday night's contest holding a 24-5 advantage in shots. Cal also had an 11-1 edge in shots on goal and a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks as they controlled the match throughout. The Bears moved to 2-0 all-time against UNLV (2-6-0).
In the 11th minute, after the Bears held possession, the ball came out to Kailee Gifford on the right flank. Gifford whipped the ball into the box, where Ari Manrique was able to latch on with a one-time shot, which forced a diving save.
The Bears got on the board in the 19th minute after a nice exchange down the right flank, Ayo Oke played the ball into the box where Mia Fontana got on the end of it and after the first shot was saved. Fontana collected the rebound and put it home to give the Bears the lead.
In the 32nd minute, Noelle-Bond Flasza collected the ball after some nice interplay in the Bears offensive third. Bond-Flasza sent a scorching shot that went just wide of the net to keep the score at 1-0. Just a few minutes later Natalie Hueston collected a ball, worked her way down the right and fired a shot that went off the post.
The Bears continued to mount pressure as a nice exchange down the left side saw the ball find Bond-Flasza in the middle. She laid it off to Oke who hit a 22-yard shot on frame and forced a save from UNLV keeper Riley Liebsack.
The Bears opened the second half with another goal as Ari Manrique headed home a corner kick from Keely Roy. Manrique challenged the keeper and won the battle to the cross as she was able to not it home to put the Bears up in the 50th minute.
Alexis Wright and Bond-Flasza had excellent second half opportunities to add to the lead. Bond-Flasza made a run and dribbled past the keeper, but a last-ditch tackle saved the goal.
Fontana almost added a second goal in the 78th minute as she collected a corner kick at the top of the box and fired a shot that was on-target but deflected out by a defender.
Teagan Wy made her Cal debut as she came in at goalkeeper for the second half. Wy is Cal's lone freshman this year and combined with starter Angelina Anderson to record Cal's fourth shutout of the season.
All 22 Bears on the travel roster played during Thursday's contest. Julia Gonsman also made her Cal debut appearing late in the game after missing each of her first two seasons in blue and gold due to injury.
The Bears will return to action on Sunday afternoon as they wrap up non-conference play against Penn at Edwards Stadium. The game will kickoff at 1 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with men's soccer. The men's game will kickoff at 4 p.m. with both games on the Pac-12 Network.
