Sun Devils Fifth After Day One at Fighting Illini Invite
Olympia Fields, Ill. – Arizona State Men's Golf shot a 5-over 285 and were paced by Preston Summerhays at 1-under 69 to sit in a tie for fifth as a team after the first round of the 2022 Fighting Illini Invite.
Summerhays and Luke Potter led the Sun Devils with four birdies each, with three of Summerhays' birdies coming on the back-9.
Ryggs Johnston was the second-best individual for ASU finishing a single stroke behind Summerhays and in a tie for 13th overall. His card boasted a two-under par, bogey-free showing on the back-9.
"The course is really tough and I thought the guys really stayed in it well today." ASU Head Coach Matt Thurmond said. "We couldn't make anything and when you're not getting those little emotional spikes that birdies give you, it's easy to become impatient or demoralized. I didn't see that. They hung in well and I think that will serve us well for the next rounds when a few more putts drop."
Playing with their second lineup in as many weeks, ASU found itself in the top-half of the team standings the entire round, never showing lower than sixth overall. In fact, the Sun Devils are one of only five squads in the 15-team, 78-player field to have all of their participants in the top 60 overall.
The second round will begin tomorrow morning from Olympia Fields Golf Club. ASU will tee off in nine minute increments beginning at 8:45 a.m. CST from the first hole.
