Bears Open America East Play This Weekend

The Bears open America East play this weekend, traveling to UAlbany and Bryant.

BERKELEY – The California field hockey team returns to action this week, opening America East play with road contests at UAlbany and Bryant.
 
The Bears open up the road trip at UAlbany, taking on the Great Danes on Friday at 10 a.m. PT. Friday's game will feature live stats and video which can be accessed below. On Sunday, the Bears will take on Bryant at Lenon Family Field at Providence College. Sunday's contest between the Bears and Bulldogs is slated for a 9:00 a.m. start and will only feature live stats.

AT A GLANCE

  • The Wall: Cato Knipping has been tremendous defending the cage this season. The senior had 24 saves last weekend against North Carolina and Wake Forrest. For the year, Knipping has 39 saves, averaging 6.50 saves per game. That number ranks 12th best in the nation.
  • 200 for Knipping: One more note on the senior keeper, in the game against Wake Forrest Knipping tallied her 200th career save, she currently has 204.
  • Corner Count: The Bears have been exceptional in getting corners this year, they currently rank 27th in the nation in corners per game averaging 6.67 per game. Last time out against Wake Forest, the Bears had
  • Points Leader: Junior Sara Stone is having a career year. The native of San Diego leads the team with nine points off three goals. Her 0.50 goals per game rank 71st in the nation and 10th in the America East. Stone had the Bears' lone goal in the loss against Wake Forest on Sep. 11.

ABOUT THE GREAT DANES
UAlbany enters Friday's contest with a 5-2 overall record. The Great Danes have won four straight, averaging 3.75 goals a game during that stretch. Last time out, UAlbany dispatched Ivy League foes, Cornell and Yale. Leading the team in scoring is sophomore midfielder Alison Smisdom with 17 points on seven goals and three assists in seven contests.

SERIES HISTORY
Friday will be the fourth meeting between the two teams with the Golden Bears owning a 2-1 series lead. The series dates back to Sep. 13, 2008, when Cal defeated UAlbany 3-2 in overtime in Berkeley. Last time out, UAlbany defeated Cal 2-1 on Oct. 31, 2021, in Albany.

ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
Bryant enters this weekend with a 4-4 overall record. They open the week at Vermont on Friday. At home, Bryant is 3-1 this season. After starting the year 0-3, the Bulldogs have won three of their last four contests, including three in a row. Last weekend, Bryant took down Stonehill and Saint Louis. Senior midfielder Brittany Gouws leads the team with 14 points on six goals and two assists. Last week, she notched a hattrick in the win over Saint Louis.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Sunday marks the fourth time the two teams have squared off. The series has belonged to the Bears who are 3-0 with three lopsided wins over Bryant. The last time these teams faced each other was on Sep. 8, 2017, with Cal winning 8-0.    

UP NEXT
Cal returns to Berkeley the following week when UC Davis comes to Underhill Field on Friday, Sep. 30. The game between the Golden Bears and Aggies is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start time. There will be a special pregame ceremony honoring Cal's seniors as part of Senior Night.
