Beavers Drop Match To Ducks In Front Of Record Student Crowd

Sep 21, 2022

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team fell to Oregon in four sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-19, 25-20) in front of a record 1,989 students on Wednesday night at Gill Coliseum.
"I was stoked when I saw all the students come out," head coach Mark Barnard said. "It was unbelievable. The energy they gave us was amazing and really helped us out. I've been here 18 years and to have that from the students tonight was truly remarkable."
Mychael Vernon returned to the starting lineup for the Beavs, leading all attackers with 17 kills in the match. She was joined in double-figures by Vivian Light (13) and Izzi Szulczewski (10), who finished with a double-double, adding 14 digs.
The Beaver (5-6, 0-1 PAC-12) offense spread the wealth in the opening portion of the match with Vernon collection four kills, while Light and Aliyah McDonald grabbing three each in the first set. With the score deadlocked at 16, the Ducks (7-2, 0-1 PAC-12) countered with a furious 8-1 run to grab a 1-0 lead in the match.
Feeding off the energy of the students, OSU answered back, with six different Beavs collecting a kill in the second set. Oregon State held the Ducks to just a .103 hitting clip in the stanza, as the defense collected 21 digs to help the Beavers knot the match at one set each.
Errors proved costly for OSU in the third with the Beavers making eight in the set and two from the service line to aid the Ducks. Oregon was able to find some rhythm offensively, while limiting the Beavs to attack at just a .097 clip and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Light tried to spark the Beavers offensively in the third, adding five of her 13 kills in the frame. Unfortunately for the Beavers, her efforts weren't quite enough to prolong the match as Oregon took the fourth set 25-20 to finish the match.
The Beavs face a short turnaround, welcoming Cal to Gill Coliseum on Friday. First serve is set for 6 p.m. PST.OUR MISSION
