Men's Tennis Finishes Day Two of Bedford Cup
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Utes resumed competition at the ITA Beford Cup in the Mountains today with one team in doubles and two individuals still competing in singles play at the beginning of the day.
During the quarterfinal doubles draw, Utes Bruno Krenn and Mateo Julio faced Elyes Marouani and Tristan Sarap from Weber State. After a close match, the Utes fell to the Bobcat duo, 7-5, retiring the team from doubles competition.
As the day moved to the first round of single matches, Utah's Krenn prepared to compete against Denver's Daniel Sancho Arbizu in the semifinal round draw for Group A. After battling it out, Krenn ultimately gave the Sanch the victory, dropping the match 7-6(7-4), 1-6, 7-6 (8-6). Krenn will now participate in the 3rd/4th seed playoff on Sunday morning.
Julio played in the consolidation draw four Group A today, challenging Nicolas Herrero Cuesta from Denver. Despite his effort, Julio lost the match 7-6(10-7), 7-6(7-3) and will play in the 7th/8th seed playoff round tomorrow morning.
Charlie Spina earned a bye into the consolation draw for Group C, facing Jacob Huppin from Montana State in the quarterfinal round. Spina gave the competition a tough second set, but did not push the match into set three, awarding Huppin with a 6-2, 7-6(7-4) win.
Dylan Applegate faced AJ Moore from USAFA in the consolidation bracket for Group C today, but also dropped the exhausting match 6-2, 2-6, 10-7.
The squad will finish competing in their respective consolidation draws Sunday morning, beginning once again at 9 a.m. MT.
