No. 2 UCLA Advances to MPSF Invitational Semifinals

STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 2 UCLA (12-0) rallied to defeat No. 7 Long Beach State (9-4), 7-6, on Saturday morning in the quarterfinals of the 2022 MPSF Invitational at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center. UCLA improved to 105-21-1 in the series history with its ninth-straight win over the Beach.

The Bruins had five players score in the game, paced by a game-high-tying three goals from sophomore Chase Dodd. Dodd also had two field blocks in the fourth quarter, including the game-saving block with 10 seconds remaining on a power play by the Beach with UCLA leading 7-6. Senior Tommy Gruwell converted a penalty shot (4Q - 3:22) that proved to be the game winner.

Senior Bernardo Maurizi got the start in the cage and went the distance, registering seven saves and two steals while allowing six goals.

Rafael Real-Vargas led LBSU with three goals and Andrej Bosanac had 6 saves while surrendering seven goals to UCLA.

> Long Beach State outscored the Bruins 1-0 in the first period.
> The only score of the opening period was on a penalty shot (1:27).

> The two teams battled to a 1-1 draw in the second period with the Beach leading 2-1 at the break.
> LBSU opened the scoring in the second (5:14) with a power play goal to go up 2-0.
> Freshman Gray Carson got the Bruins on the board with a power play goal (4:03) to end the scoring in the second at 2-1 LBSU.
> UCLA dominated LBSU, 4-1, in the third to take a 5-3 lead into the fourth period.
> Senior Cameron Reagan opened the scoring in the third with a strike from the front court (6:07) to tie things up at 2-2.
> Redshirt sophomore Gianpiero Di Martire gave UCLA its first lead of the game (3:54) with a score from the front court to make it 3-2.
> Then Dodd took a feed from Di Martire to score the Bruins' fourth-straight goal (3:08) on a power play to push the lead to 4-2.
> After a goal by LBSU (1:24), Dodd netted his second off another pass from Di Martire (1:04) to end the scoring in the third.

> Long Beach State won the fourth quarter, 3-2, to provide the 7-6 final.
> After LBSU got the opening score of the fourth (5:11), redshirt junior Giorgio Alessandria drew a penalty that was converted by Dodd (4:53) to complete his hat trick and extend the lead to 6-4.
> Another goal by the Beach (3:47) was followed by another drawn penalty from Alessandria and a conversion by Gruwell (3:22) to push the lead to 7-5.
> LBSU scored again (2:58) on a power play to cut it to 7-6, but UCLA's Dodd came up with a big defensive stop on a power play shot by Raul Morales with 0:10 remaining to seal the win.

The Bruins return to action later today in the semifinals of the MPSF Invitational against No. 3 USC at Stanford at 5:20 p.m. PT at Avery Aquatic Center.
