Repeat doubles champions Carl Emil Overbeck (left) and Yuta Kikuchi (right) hoist their trophy from the Battle in the Bay Classic.

SAN FRANCISCO/NAPA, Calif. – Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck repeated as the doubles champions at the Battle in the Bay Classic on Sunday, with the duo defeating Cal men's tennis teammates Lucas Magnaudet and Ryder Jackson, 8-6, in the final, as the tournament came to a close.

The annual tournament – hosted by the University of San Francisco – was a good one for both sets of finalists. Magnaudet and Jackson made news on their way to the final, as they upset the nation's No. 1 and No. 51 doubles teams on Saturday and came close to besting their teammates.

"It's always special – given that there were some good doubles teams there – to defend a title," said Kris Kwinta, Cal's Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis. "We know what to expect from Yuta and Carl. They're a great team, and they represented us well. For Ryder and Lucas to step up and beat the No. 1 team in the country, beat another good team and almost beat Yuta and Carl in the final, that showed a lot of potential there. We're excited for how both teams played."

Jackson also played well in singles, reaching the semifinals.

"That was fun to see as well because he didn't play much over the summer, so for him to go out and win three singles matches – including beating the No. 6 seed, Andre Ilagan from Hawaii – that was pretty spectacular," Kwinta said. "He nearly took down TCU's (65th-ranked) Jacob Fearnley in the semifinals, too. We're pretty excited for him and the level he's playing at now."

A pair of Bears also completed play in the Napa Valley Invitational on Sunday at the Silverado Resort & Spa. Alex Chang and John Kim beat USF's Johan Garpered and Nikola Kuraica, 8-1, in doubles, though both Bears fell in singles.

"The goal for them was to compete and figure out what they need to work on, under pressure," Kwinta said of his Bears in Napa. "We enjoyed their performances and how they were working on things. What we need to work on going forward is much clearer now."

Cal is next scheduled to play in the Aggie Invitational – from Sept. 30-Oct. 2 – at UC Davis.
