San Francisco - No. 86 Colton Smith and No. 32 Jonas Ziverts each made their second appearance at the Battle in the Bay Classic that saw Ziverts claim the runner-up spot in the championship round.
Seventh-seeded Ziverts battled No. 65 and fifth-seeded Jacob Fearnley (TCU). Fearnley defeated the Wildcat 6-4, 7-5.
The fifth-year captain made it to the final round after defeating all of his previous opponents in straight sets. In the semifinals, Ziverts took down No. 5 in the country and first-seeded Luc Fomba (TCU) 7-5, 6-1. He beat No. 45 and fifth-seeded Tim Zeitvogel (Pepp) 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
In the initial round of 32, the Cats took down two Golden Bears. Ziverts defeated Carl Overbeck (Cal) 6-3, 6-1 and Smith won his match against Lucas Magnaudet (Cal) 6-4, 6-2. Then in R16 Smith was knocked out by Fearnley in two sets 4-6, 6(3)-7(7), while Ziverts advanced after his 6-3, 6-4 win over Will Cooksey (Mich).
Smith won both his consolation matches in straight sets: 6-2, 7-5 against Jacob Bullard (ASU) and 6-3, 6-4 vs. No. 54 Nino Ehrenschneider (Mich).
Arizona made it to the quarterfinals in doubles play after defeating third-seeded Lui Maxted and Pedro Marcos (TCU) 8-5 in R16 but ultimately fell to No. 51 Nathan Han and Alex Martinez (OU) in a tight tiebreaker 8-7(4).
This is the furthest the Wildcats have ever made it in the Northern California tournament. Next up for Men's Tennis is the All-Americans Qualifying draw in Tulsa, Okla. October 3-4 followed by the All-Americans Main draw Oct. 5-9.
