Big Chances on Deck for Beavs

Sep 28, 2022

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Beavers will return to action this weekend against the Los Angeles-based Pac-12 opponents – No. 20/- USC and No. 1/1 UCLA – at Paul Lorenz Field.

In their last time out, Oregon State dropped their league opener to Washington State following a 70th minute strike by the Cougars to take last Friday's contest by a 1-0 score. Gwen Jacobs and Megin Turi led the Beavers with a shot on goal apiece, while McKenna Martinez and Abby Schwartz had a pair of shots.

SCOUTING USC
Coming off stunning then-No. 19 Stanford by a 2-1 margin, USC enters the matchup ranked 20th in the country. Nicole Payne – the reigning Pac-12 offensive player – led the Trojans with the match-deciding brace over the Cardinal and is tied for the lead among the team with three goals to her name. Simone Jackson has also tallied three goals. Croix Bethune leads the Women of Troy in points with eight behind a pair of goals and four assists. After dropping their season opener, the Trojans have gone undefeated and have yielded just three goals.

LAST TIME AGAINST THE TROJANS
Oregon State fell to USC, 2-1, last September in Los Angeles. Abby Schwartz's 15th minute score was answered with Trojan goals in the 23rd and 85th minutes.

SCOUTING UCLA
Sitting atop both major polls, the UCLA Bruins come to Corvallis after a Thursday night showdown with Oregon in Eugene. With a 9-0-0 record in hand, the Bruins are led offensively by Sunshine Fontes, who has put away 13 points from six goals and helping on another. The UCLA defense has been quite stout, conceding just five times in their nine matches. Lauren Brzykcy has tallied nearly 736 minutes in net and has made 25 stops. In their league opener, they took down in-state foe, California, 2-0 last Friday.

LAST TIME AGAINST THE BRUINS
Oregon State fell to UCLA by a 4-1 score at Paul Lorenz Field last October. McKenna Martinez scored off a feed from Bryanna Pizarro to cut into the deficit.
