Sep 29, 2022

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona women's soccer team fell in a 2-0 decision to Stanford on Thursday, moving to 3-4-2 on the season and 0-2-0 in in conference play.

The first half saw a tight defensive battle in which neither team took more than seven shots. Each squad took a shot in the first 10 minutes of the match with Sami Baytosh getting the first opportunity for Arizona.

Hope Hisey recorded a pair of saves early, keeping Stanford out of the goal in the 14th and 17th minutes. In total, the senior grabbed eight saves in the contest to mark her most in a match this season.

At halftime, the match remained scoreless thanks to a strong defensive effort by the Wildcats.

"The first half of the game was the best half of soccer we've played all season," said head coach Becca Moros. "If we want to be the team that we think we can be and that we know we can be, every half has to be like that. We finished the game very strong; we had energy, we had legs and we were fighting."

The squad came out strong for the second half, taking four shots in the opening five minutes of the period, but Stanford got the edge in the 51st minute when Lumi Kostmayer's shot from just inside the top of the box got by Hisey.

The Cardinal added a goal to its total in the 63rd minute when Allie Montoya sent in a cross to Maya Doms, whose header found the back of the net to put Stanford up 2-0.

Arizona returns to Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium Sunday, Oct. 2 at 12:00pm PT as it welcomes California. Tickets are available at arizonawildcats.com/soccer. The game will also be available via live stream on ArizonaWildcats.com.
