Buffs Notes: Changes On O-line Produce Season High Rushing Yards

Oct 1, 2022

TUCSON, Ariz. — Colorado coach Karl Dorrell changed up the Buffaloes' offensive line Saturday, and CU produced its highest scoring total and rushing total of the season.

Still, it wasn't enough as Arizona cruised to a 43-20 victory at Arizona Stadium.

Dorrell inserted Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan into the starting spot at left tackle, the first career start for the sophomore. The Buffs also moved Van Wells to center — he had started the last two games at guard — with Casey Roddick and Tommy Brown at the guard spots and Jake Wiley at right tackle.

The moves seemed to help the running game, as the Buffs ran for a season-high 154 yards. True freshman Anthony Hankerson rushed for a career-best 68 yards and a touchdown, averaging 5.7 yards per carry.

"He's been a positive glimmer for us offensively," Dorrell said. "He's a kid that since he's been back from injury, he loves the game. He's a great teammate. The way he plays, it rubs off on you. He's doing some really positive things."

"We felt there was some efficiency offensively, but I want bigger plays," Dorrell said. "We have to have more chunks and run the ball even a little bit better. We need to be on the field longer and have more production."

Colorado freshman quarterback Owen McCown made his second start and finished 14-for-30 passing for 186 yards and a touchdown, and he also had his second rushing touchdown of the season.

BUFFS BITS: Running back Charlie Offerdahl became the 19th Buff to catch a pass this season when he hauled in a 36-yard screen pass in the first quarter. That ties the Colorado record for the most players to catch at least one pass in a season, matching the number in 1999 and 2004 … Along with Christian-Lichtenhan, tight end Erik Olsen and Marvin Ham II got their first starts as Buffs … Prior to Saturday, the last team to amass 600 offensive yards against the Buffs was Texas (638) in the 2020 Alamo Bowl. It's also the third time Arizona has put up at least 600, with the Wildcats' 673 on Saturday surpassing the 616 in 2015 and 670 in 2013. UA's total was also the most by a CU opponent since Oregon compiled 755 in 2013 … CU now leads the series with Arizona 16-9, including a 9-4 mark in Tucson … Deion Smith's 41-yard reception in the second half was the longest play of his career … Jordyn Tyson's 42-yard reception in the third quarter tied for CU's longest play from scrimmage this year.
