SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Oregon State's attempt for consecutive upsets over a ranked Utah fell short as the 12th-ranked Utes dropped the Beavers by a 42-16 score.
Responding from a Utes score on their first possession, a 29-yard dash from Silas Golden got the Beavers (3-2, 0-2 Pac-12) into the endzone and helped tie the game after a successful PAT. It capped a 79-yard drive that took seven plays.
Utah (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12) followed with a pair of touchdowns themselves for a 21-7 advantage with just fewer than a minute into the second. Two field goals – both from 26 yards out – by Atticus Sappington got the Beavers within eight of the Utes going into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, Ben Gulbranson and a heavy rushing attack from Deshaun Fenwick, Damien Martinez and Jam Griffin set up Sappington with another kick for three, cutting the deficit to six. Utah promptly responded a fourth touchdown to stretch their lead to 12.
The hosts then had two unanswered scores to pull away.
Gulbranson led the Beavers through the air with 177 yards from 12 completions. Fenwick and Martinez each carried for a team-high 10 times on the afternoon.
The Beavers will stay on the road as a visit to Stanford is next up on Oct. 8th. Kickoff from Stanford Stadium is slated for 8 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN.
