Cal Fall Invitational Concludes

Oct 2, 2022
Hannah Viller Moeller won singles and doubles matches Sunday as Cal's season-opening tournament came to an end.

BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team completed play in the annual Cal Fall Invitational, with the Golden Bears capturing four wins in seven matches on Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts.
The Cal duo of Jessica Alsola and Valentina Ivanov defeated Stanford's Connie Ma and Alexandra Yepifanova, 8-3, in an extra doubles match played in the morning at Hellman. The match was played in lieu of the top-flight final between the Cardinal pair and Emilee Astle and Yunjia Huang of BYU, which doesn't compete on Sundays. Despite their Sunday loss, Ma and Yepifanova won the doubles title at the Cal Fall Invite.
Over at the Channing Tennis Courts, Cal's pair of Hannah Viller Moeller and Erin Richardson bested Cal Poly's Delanie and Peyton Dunkle, 8-3. Viller Moeller also posted a singles win over Iowa State's Sofia Cabeza, 6-1, 6-4.
The Bears' ended their run in their season-opening tournament when Cami Brown beat Maddi Page of UC Davis, 7-5, 7-5 at Hellman.
The top singles title went to Stanford's Ma, who beat teammate Angelica Blake, 6-3, 6-2, in the Blue-flight final.
"We want to get match play in, and it's nice to be able to play once at home in the fall," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We got what we needed. And now we have a short turnaround with the ITA regionals starting Oct. 14 at Stanford. We had some great competition here, and so all in all, it was a great weekend of tennis."
After the Cal Fall Invite, Alsola headed to the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, North Carolina, where she will compete in main draw singles and, with Katja Wiersholm, in main draw doubles. Wiersholm earned a spot in the ITA All-American qualifying singles field, which competes Monday and Tuesday. The main draws start Wednesday and run through next Sunday.

Additionally, Ivanov is slated to play in the 25K Ascension Project Women's Open, a USTA Pro Circuit event, starting Monday and running through Sunday, Oct. 9.
