Trhac Dominated Utah Invitational

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's tennis team was in action at the Utah Invitational #1 and the Dar Walters Classic this past weekend. Making his Utah debut, Patrik Trhac dominated as he went undefeated to win his singles draw. Well, in Boise, Charlie Spina went undefeated in singles for the weekend. 
 
Utah Invitational #1
The Ute squad wrapped up the Utah Invitational #1 this Sunday afternoon after facing final opponents from Utah State and Idaho State.
 
Trhac took another victory on the weekend when he defeated Sergi Mico Fenollar, finishing 7-6(2), 6-2. That moved him to 3-0 in the red draw and put himself in a position to win the draw. Moving into the afternoon match, Trhac needed to defeat Patrick Kristensen of Idaho to win the draw. Trhac dropped the first set to the Bengals top player. However, Trhac came back and won the following two sets, taking the match. He won 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, to go 4-0 on the weekend and to claim the Red Draw.
 
Against Utah State, J. Blando faced Savin and lost 7-6(5), 6-2. M. Blando put up an admirable fight but ultimately fell to Ruiz 6-2, 6-3.
The team faced Idaho State in the final round of competition this afternoon. J. Blando and M. Blando took the victory against Bengals Valentino De Pellegrin and Victor Sklenka, finishing 6-4.
 
J. Blando faced De Pellegrin and took the upper hand, finishing 6-4, 6-2, moving to 3-1 in his draw on the weekend. M. Blando faced Bengal Ethan Lye and took the win closing out with 7-5, 6-3.
 
In doubles against Utah State, Jayson Blando and Michael Blando played against Javier Ruiz and Roko Savin but dropped their match 7-6(5) after a tough battle.
 
Dar Walters Classic
The Utah men finished the Dar Walters tournament with two victories in the consolation draw, and the Utes had Spina working on a perfect singles weekend. Entering Sunday, Spina was 3-0 in singles play at the Classic.
 
Dylan Applegate and Charlie Spina won 3-0 in their competition against Erik Sarlvik and Steven Paz from Eastern Washington. The Ute duo defeated the rivals 6-2 in their doubles match. Applegate went into a three-set match against Sarlvik, coming out victorious with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 finish. Spina also downed Paz, coming out of the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win under his belt for his perfect weekend of going 4-0 in singles play.
 
Teammates Rian Ta and Geremia Rossi also won 3-0 after facing Tyler Dalos and Brady Thomas from Eastern Washington. Ta/Rossi downed Dalo/Thomas 6-3 in their doubles match. Ta defeated Dalos 6-3, 6-0 in a near sweep, and Rossi defeated Thomas 1-0 as Thomas retired due to injury.
 
Next Up
The Utah team will reconvene after a weekend full of action before sending Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Espin Busleiman to the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The squad will also prepare for the upcoming Bengal Invitational in Pocatello, Idaho.
