HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. - Sun Devil Women's Golf completed both the first and second round of the Windy City Collegiate on Monday.
With several teams still to finish their second round as play was suspended today due to darkness, Arizona State (+24/600) currently sits in seventh place. They improved their score by six strokes from the first to second round, showing no signs of fatigue despite the difficult set up.
"When you agree to play in the Windy City Collegiate, you know what you sign up for," Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye remarked after the round. "It is a marathon day of 36 holes, but this challenge will benefit us in the long run."
Freshman Beth Coulter (+3/147) set the tone with another strong performance, currently sitting in a tie for seventh. She fired a 72 (E) in the second round, the best score by any Sun Devil on the day. Coulter had a total of six birdies over two rounds. Calynne Rosholt (+6/150) is tied for 25th, while Grace Summerhays (+7/151) is one stroke behind and tied for 32nd. Ashley Menne and Paula Schulz-Hanssen look to take advantage of the final day and move up the leaderboard, with 18 holes still remaining tomorrow. The action starts at 7:15 AM MST, with live scoring via Golfstat found here.
FIRST ROUND
Arizona State began their round on the first hole and started on the front nine, with Paula Schulz-Hanssen pacing the team with two birdies and the lowest score at +1. The birdies started to come for Beth Coulter on the back nine, as she recorded two of her own down the stretch. The back nine is where Calynne Rosholt played her best golf of the day, playing mistake free and remaining even over her final nine holes.
SECOND ROUND
The Sun Devils had a tough task in having to turnaround and immediately start another round after playing 18 holes at one of the nation's strongest tournaments. The Sun Devils were not phased, improving their score by six strokes from round one to round two. Three of five Sun Devils lowered their totals from earlier, led by Beth Coulter. Coulter managed to finish even thanks to a one-under run over her final eight holes of the day. Grace Summerhays (+1/73) also shaved strokes off thanks to a five-birdie effort in the second round. Four of those five birdies came during an insane 10-hole stretch to start her second round. Rosholt carried over her strong play from the end of the first round by recording birdies on two of her first four holes in the second round. Paula Schulz-Hanssen also had an improved score, helping the Sun Devils move up five spots on the leaderboard to this point. Play was suspended in the middle of the second round due to darkness, with some teams still on the course and needing to finish their round.
QUOTABLES
"We showed tremendous resiliency today," Coach Farr-Kaye observed. "It was a long day of golf that test both our mental and physical endurance, but I was encouraged that we got better as the day went on."
"Beth (Coulter) led us with a strong performance with a chance at a Top-10 finish tomorrow," Coach Farr-Kaye added. "Really proud of the way she played down the stretch today and how she has come out strong this season."
