Jehlarova named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week

Oct 3, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO -- Following a record-setting blocking performance in a Friday sweep over Cal backed up by another strong showing against ninth-ranked Stanford, Washington State volleyball (10-5, 2-2 Pac-12) senior Magda Jehlarova was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office Monday.  The middle blocker from Prerov, Czech Republic, currently ranks 16th in the nation with 1.43 blocks/set and is the conference's leader and No. 21 in the country with 77 total blocks through 15 matches.

Jehlarova tied a three-set WSU record with 11 total blocks and had a team-high 13 kills (13-1-22, .545) in Friday's win at Cal before registering another eight blocks and 12 kills, respectively, in Sunday's road match at ninth-ranked Stanford.

Her 11 blocks were tied for the most in the Pac-12 this season and helped keep Jehlarova at No. 1 in the conference among active blocking leaders with 1.42 blocks/set for her career.  Now a six-time winner of the conference's defensive player of the week award, her 1.42 blocks/set rank second all-time at WSU while she also moved into third-place all-time this last weekend in both block assists (409) and total blocks (501) for her career.

The award is the eighth weekly player of the week accolade in Jehlarova's WSU career, having also been named freshman of the year once (2019), offensive player of the week once (2020).

Washington State will host the conference's leaders, 12th-ranked Oregon (10-2, 4-0 Pac-12), in Bohler Gym on Friday beginning at 7 p.m.  The Cougars will then host Oregon State (6-8, 1-3 Pac-12) on Sunday beginning at noon.
