Lonny Sargent Named Volunteer Assistant Coach for Softball

Oct 4, 2022

TEMPE, Ariz.– Head coach Megan Bartlett announced a new addition to her staff on Tuesday afternoon. After announcing his retirement as head coach from the Western Oregon University softball team last season, Lonny Sargent will join the Arizona State softball coaching staff for the upcoming 2023 season. Sargent joins first-year Sun Devil Coach Bartlett as a volunteer assistant to her staff, which consists of first-year assistant Jeremy Manley and third-year assistant Jimmy Kolaitis. The Sun Devils are coming off a Pac-12 Conference title and an appearance in super regionals.

Sargent was the winningest head coach in program history while at WOU. He finished his career at the school with a 254-221 record, which includes one Great Northwest Atlantic Conference (GNAC) title in 2014. That season, the Wolves were selected to compete in the NCAA Division II West Regionals, which allowed them to earn a program-record 34 wins in a single season.

Under Sargent's guidance, WOU was the only school to qualify for every GNAC tournament since its creation in 2013. In his ten seasons as head coach, he never had a team finish lower than fourth place in the conference standings; he had 16 First-Team All-GNAC selections, 17 Second-Team All-GNAC selections, and seven honorable mention selections; and he collected GNAC Coach of the Year honors in 2014.

On and off the field at WOU, his impact was felt throughout the softball program where tremendous fundraising efforts helped create scholarships and raised more than $400,000 to support travel, facility upgrades, equipment, and gear at the university.

Prior to coaching at WOU, Sargent coached three years at Reynolds high school and spent two seasons with Utah State in the 2004-2005 season.
