Bears Place 7th At Blessings Collegiate Invitational
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Sophomore Jieming Yang had her best round at Cal and the Golden Bear women's golf team put together its best day of the tournament to finish in seventh place at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Wednesday.
Yang shot 2-under 70 in the final round and was Cal's top individual finisher, placing in a tie for 24th. Graduate student Annika Borrelli was close behind in a tie for 26th in the 57-player field.
The Bears shot 14-over as a team Wednesday and were 50-over for the tournament. Mississippi State won the event at 15-over par on the 6,422-yard Blessings Golf Course.
"Endurance is part of the game of golf," Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel said. "Playing a championship course like this gives us a good look at what's needed to do to come back in May. Getting the chance to play three rounds here is really important to our season."
Yang improved with each passing round this week before putting together a career-best performance Wednesday. She registered four birdies and two bogeys to beat her previous career-best round by one shot.
"Anyone able to get under par on the Blessings is stroking it well and managing their game off the tee," McDaniel said. "We're just really proud of her for sticking with it all the way through. She showed a lot of grit."
The Bears are now off until competing at the Stanford Intercollegiate on Oct. 21-23.
