Oct 6, 2022

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Arizona soccer got its first conference win of the season in stellar fashion on Thursday, defeating No. 8 USC in Los Angeles, 1-0. The Wildcats' win handed USC its first loss of the 2022 season.

The win is Arizona's (4-5-2, 1-3 Pac-12) first over USC (7-2-1, 3-1 Pac-12) since 2013 and marked the Wildcats' first win over a a top-10 team since it defeated No. 10 UCLA in a 3-0 decision in 2019. It was the highest-ranked win for the program since the squad defeated No. 4 Texas in 2007.

Nicole Dallin scored the game winner off of a pass from Megan Chelf. The junior drew Trojans goalkeeper Anna Smith out of the goal before sending the ball into the net for her first goal of the season and the second of her career.

Sophomore Gianna Christiansen got off a shot early in the match, and her shot was the only one in the first 20 minutes of play. Arizona's defense shut down multiple USC attempts to score in the early minutes of the game.

A set piece in the 22nd minute by Iliana Hocking set up a shot by Sami Baytosh, whose header was saved by Smith. Smith saved a shot by Chelf less than a minute later to keep the match scoreless.

Strong defensive work by the Wildcats throughout the first period meant that USC was not able to take a shot until the 31st minute.

Desiree Foster nearly got Arizona on the board in the 39th minute, but Smith punched it out to keep the match scoreless.

The teams traded shots for the first 20 minutes of the second half, but neither squad was able to get a goal on the scoreboard until Dallin's shot put the Wildcats in the lead.

Hope Hisey denied USC's Croix Bethune from the penalty spot in the 66th minute, diving to her left to keep the Trojans off the board.

Hisey totaled five saves on the day, bringing her career total to 270 and moving her to fourth all-time at Arizona. The shutout was the 17th of her career, gaining her sole possession of the third-most in program history.

Arizona returns to action Sunday, Oct. 9 as it plays at UCLA at 2:00pm PT.
