Lacrosse Adds Final Impact Signing

Oct 7, 2022

On the eve of her sixth birthday, Selene Gutierrez joined as the newest member of the Oregon lacrosse program at Papé Field Wednesday evening.

Joining Selene was her mother Yorley, Coach Chelsea Hoffmann, director of operations Nellie Schafer, and four of her new teammates, juniors Morgan McCarthy and Madysyn Sweeney and sophomores Alex Matsuoka and Haley Taylor, as she signed her letter of intent to become a Duck.

"Today is a very special day, especially special for our women's lacrosse program," said Coach Chelsea Hoffmann as she opened up the event. "Today, we welcome Selene and her family to join our program but don't let Selene's size fool you. Selene is full of grit, competitiveness, tenacity and is a sassy little girl, which fits this program perfectly. Your grit is what this program is all about and we are more than excited to add you to our flock because you will be a huge addition to this flock to elevate our program to new heights."

"We are so excited to be a part of this program and feel so blessed to have already met some of you," said Selene's mother, Yorley Gutierrez. "You guys have been so amazing and I have noticed quite a difference in Selene already just with the little interaction she has had with all of you already and I am just thankful and blessed."

Asked about being a part of the Ducks, Selene had one thing to say, "Go Ducks!"

Selene became a Duck in partnership with Team IMPACT. The young Oregonian was diagnosed with leukemia, a form of blood cancer that hinders the body's ability to combat disease and infection. Oregon Athletics continues its work with Team Impact, having partnered with the non-profit for several years, with past signees on the volleyball, baseball and softball programs.
