Ducks Fall on PK at Colorado
BOULDER, Colo. – Colorado scored on a penalty kick in the 74th minute to defeat Oregon 1-0 Sunday at Prentup Field.
"This is as tough as a weekend as there is in the conference, and we come away thinking we could have had a win and at least a tie," said head coach Graeme Abel, whose squad defeated Utah 1-0 on Thursday. "We know have to recover and reset for another tough trip."
How it Happened: Oregon was whistled for a foul just out its own penalty box in the 73rd minute. On the ensuing free kick, the ball struck an Oregon player on the arm inside the box and Colorado was awarded a penalty kick, which Civana Kuhlmann converted for the only score of the game.
"We knew about the set piece factor when it comes to Colorado and they punished us with the free kick and then the penalty," said Abel.
Leah Freeman made six saves for the Ducks (4-5-4, 2-3).
What It Means: Oregon lost on the road for the first time this season.
Head Coach Graeme Abel, looking ahead to Colorado:
"I thought we defended well in the first half and early part of the second half. We didn't connect as well as we liked at times so that forced us to work harder in transition."
Zoe Hasenauer started her 84th career match Sunday to tie former teammate Chardonnay Curran (2017-21) for the UO school-record. Hasenauer could claim the record outright Friday at Washington State. … This weekend's games marked the first time this season that Oregon's seven returning starters from 2021 – Freeman, Elmore, Hasenauer, Shaw, Chai Cortez, Anna Phillips and Croix Soto – were on the field together.
Up Next: At Washington State, Friday, 7:00 p.m. Pacific (Pac-12 Live Stream).
