USC's Skylar Fields, Gala Trubint Collect Pac-12 Women's Volleyball Player of the Week Honors
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball senior outside hitter Skylar Fields (Missouri City, Texas/Ridge Point HS) was chosen as the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and freshman libero Gala Trubint (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 3-9, the Conference announced on Monday, Oct. 10.
Fields collects her second straight Pac-12 weekly award while Trubint takes home her first-career weekly honor. Fields was picked on Oct. 3 and was also twice the Big XII's Offensive Player of the Week while at Texas.
USC has had one player win a weekly award and another selected for Freshman of the Week on the same week twice in the last five years (2018, '19) claims both the offensive and defensive awards for the first time since Sept. 25, 2017 (All-American OPP Brittany Abercrombie and LIB Victoria Garrick). It is the fifth time that USC has won both awards and marks the 82nd and 83rd all-time weekly awards won by a Trojan. Since 2011, when the Pac-12 began honoring separate offensive and defensive players of the week and introduced a freshman award, Trojans have earned 25 offensive awards, 12 defensive awards, and 20 freshman honors.
Fields leads the Pac-12 in kills (308), kills per set (4.89 kps), points (336.0), and points per set (5.30 pps). She helped lead the Women of Troy to a pair of four-set road wins over Arizona and Arizona State with 49 kills (6.13 kps) on .381 hitting. Fields set new career marks with 27 kills and 29.0 points against the Sun Devils and logged her fifth and sixth consecutive 20-kill matches. She now has eight 20-plus kill contests this season and 16 in double digits. Fields also posted 13 digs against Arizona and 12 more against ASU to total 25 and averaged 3.13 dps over the weekend while collecting the fifth and sixth double-doubles of her career.
Trubint reached double-digit digs for the 17th straight match and set a new career high with 24 digs in a win against Arizona. She helped USC hold Arizona to .136 and Arizona State to .179 hitting percentages in two victories. Trubint averaged 6.00 digs per set in one match and 4.75 digs per set over two matches. She now ranks third in the Pac-12 in digs per set (4.10 dps) and is the only freshman in the top 50.
USC claimed a pair of four-set wins over the weekend to improve to 13-4 overall and to 5-1 in Pac-12 contests. The Trojans are tied for first in the league standings as they return home to Galen Center to host 17th-ranked Oregon (10-4, 4-2) on Friday (Oct. 14) at 8 p.m. PT and Oregon State (6-10, 1-5) on Sunday (Oct. 16) at noon. Both matches are set to be shown live on the Pac-12 Networks.
