Women's Tennis Opens Play at ITA Regionals

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – The Utah women's tennis team opened up play on Wednesday at the ITA Mountain Regionals hosted by UNLV. The Utes went 4-1 on the day in the main draw, which saw the Utes freshmen go 3-0 on the day. 
"Overall, a good first day for us," remarked head coach Ric Mortera. "I was proud of how we competed and overcame the majority of the challenges that came our way and got our competitive spirits going. I am happy for Kaila and Marcela to pick up the first wins of their career. I thought they did some really good things today, and I am looking forward to seeing them out there again on day two. It was great to see Anastasia and Madison starting to find a bit of rhythm as they are coming back into the swing of things. There were some positive strides made by our veterans today, and looking forward to seeing them out there again tomorrow as well."

Opening the day with doubles, the Utah duo of Madison Tattini and Anastasia Goncharova received a first-round bye moving to the round of 32. The duo is the third-seeded doubles team in the draw. 
The freshmen duo of Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez matched up with Ava Neyestani and Elinor Beazley of Northern Arizona. The Utah duo is the 8th-seeded team in the draw and were In a back-and-forth match, the Utes came up clutch with an 8-7 (3) victory. This was the first collegiate win for both freshmen, and they advanced to the round of 32. 
The freshman continued to have success in singles action on the day. Lopez picked up her second win of the day with her win in singles. She played Courtney Swift of Air Force, 6-1, 7-6, for a perfect 2-0 day. 
Her teammate, Barksdale, picked up a singles win against Wiem Boubaker of Nevada. After Barksdale won the first set 6-0 before dropping set two, 6-3. In the third and final set of the matc, Barksdale came away wit ha 6-1 win to win the match and improve to 2-0 on the day. 
Third-seeded Goncharova won the fourth win for the day for the Utes. She matched up with Nikol Dobrilova of Wyoming, and the Utes took the first set, 7-5. Goncharova came up and won the second set 6-3, winning the match. 
Tattini was in action for the Utes as she matched up with Claudia de Velasco of Denver. Tattini battled against de Velasco but dropped set one, 6-3. Tattini battled back taking set two, 7-6, forcing a third set. However, she came up just short and was defeated 6-4 in the third set. 
Thursday will see the second round of doubles (32) and two rounds of singles, the Second Round (32) and Round of 16, with action starting at 10 a.m. MT. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
