Cal Drops Conference Match Against USC

Oct 14, 2022
Cal falls to USC 0-2 in Friday evening match.

BERKELEY – No. 19 California women's soccer was defeated by No. 18 USC in Friday night's match at Edwards Stadium, snapping the team's three-game winning streak. The Bears fell to the Trojans 0-2, bringing their overall season record to 8-4-3 and 3-3 in conference-play.
The Trojans took an early lead in the match as USC's Kayla Colbert found the back of the net just three minutes in. Cal keeper Angelina Anderson made a pair of crucial saves to hold off the USC offense, but the Trojans scored again in the 18th minute to extend their lead.
Cal's Teagan Wy went into the match in the 19th minute, the earliest she's taken a spot between the goalposts in a game this season. Wy defended the net for the remainder of the match, logging 70 minutes of playing time – the freshman's most in a single match this season.
Anysa Gray and Ayo Oke both had a pair of shots in the first half and Mia Fontana logged another, but the score remained 0-2 at the intermission despite their efforts.
The Bears bounced back in the second half, their usual defensive play strong and the offense creating many opportunities to score on the Trojans. Cal tallied nine shots in the second half, with Hannah Cooper and Karlie Lema each attempting three a-piece. Cal held off the Trojans from scoring and only allowed five shot attempts. The 90 minutes expired before the Bears could find themselves on the scoreboard, though, making it the first time they were scoreless in conference play.
After a three-game stretch at home, Cal will now hit the road for two matches against Oregon State and Oregon next week, their last away matches of the regular season. They face OSU on Thursday night in Corvallis, Ore. and take on the Ducks at high noon on Sunday, Oct. 23.
