3 Bears Move Into ITA Regional Quarterfinals
STANFORD, Calif. – The Golden Bears continued their march through the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Saturday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium, with three members of the Cal women's tennis team advancing to the singles quarterfinals and three Cal doubles teams moving into the round of 16.
Cal's three pairs swept through the doubles round of 32. The second-seeded Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm defeated Washington State's Eva Alvarez Sande and Yang Lee, 8-4, the fourth-seeded and 57th-ranked Valentina Ivanov and Hannah Viller Moeller beat Cal Poly's Eliza Bates and Kennedy Buntrock, 8-1, and Erin Richardson and Makenna Thiel bested Gonzaga's Tiegan Aitken and Kianna Oda, 8-3. All three Cal duos next play at 10 a.m. in Sunday's round of 16.
In singles, four Bears posted victories in Saturday's round of 32. The round of 16 included wins from the second-seeded and 50th-ranked Alsola, who beat Sacramento State's Lou Baudouin, 6-2, 6-0; from the fifth-seeded and 97th-ranked Katja Wiersholm, who knocked off Stanford's ninth-seeded and 83rd-ranked Valencia Xu, 6-2, 6-3; and the seventh-seeded Viller Moeller, who defeated San Francisco's Maria Martinez Vaquero, 7-6(5), 6-2. All three Bears will play 12 p.m. quarterfinal matches on Sunday.
Also in the round of 16, the ninth-seeded Ivanov won the first set against Stanford's fourth-seeded and 14th-ranked Alexandra Yepifanova. But the Cal senior ultimately fell, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
In consolation singles, Cal's Cami Brown edged Eastern Washington's Leandra Nizetic, 7-5, 7-5, in round of 64 qualifying.
The ITA Northwest Regional Championships conclude on Tuesday.
