Oct 15, 2022

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Arizona Cross Country men and women both finished fourth overall at the UCR Highlander Invitational this Saturday.

"We had a great race here at the UCR Highlander Invite," said Head Coach Bernard Lagat. "The teams did amazing; both the men and women finished strong. Number four with the men and then we also finished fourth place for the women's team. We wanted to come here and feel the course because we will be back here for the Pac-12 Championships."

In the men's 8k, Ian Sanchez Lopez again led the way for the team while also finishing second overall with a PR time of 23:45.0. The second Wildcat to cross the finish line was Iker Sanchez Lopez, who placed 16th overall with a time of 24:15.5. Cooper Quigley, who ran a 24:36.2, also finished third for the men's squad. Additionally, Jeffrey Sillers posted a new personal best in the 8k, with a time of 25:03.0.

On the women's side, Sailor Hutton stepped up and finished first for the team and 14th overall with a time of 20:48.0. She was followed by Alisa Lyesina (20:58.1) and Mia Chavez (21:02.3) who ended the race close together. Erika Cunniam was Arizona's fourth team finisher, with a time of 21:14.7, and Brigid Hanley ran a new 6k PR time of 21:35.0.

The men scored 132 to edge out their fellow Pac-12 competitors of Colorado and UCLA and finish fourth overall. The women also placed fourth with their team score of 122 and finished over Colorado.

"The team is looking good, and we think what we have learned in this course, its ups and downs, is what we wanted to come and experience and then apply to the race in two weeks at the Pac-12's," added Coach Lagat. "We're excited and thank you for the support that all of you at home are giving us."
