Bruins See Success at Weis-Crockett, Highlander Invitationals

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA cross country team split squads and competed in two meets on Saturday, Oct. 15, finishing the day with three team top-10 finishes. The Bruin men and women had impressive showings at the Weis-Crockett Invitational in Stillwater, Okla., and at the Highlander Invitational in Riverside, Calif., Saturday morning.
Weis-Crockett Invitational Results
Following a strong performance at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, the Bruin men set out with something to prove in Oklahoma. Junior Ronan McMahon-Staggs led the way for UCLA, fighting throughout the race for a top-15 placement. Junior Michael Mireles lagged behind throughout the first 6,000 meters of the race, but caught his Bruin teammate around the 7,000-meter mark. Mireles crossed the finish line just .9 seconds behind McMahon-Staggs. Peter Herold crossed in 24:14.6, fewer than 20 seconds behind his junior teammates, for 29th place. Sophomore Jake Parker (63rd, 24:42.2) and freshman Jai Dawson (69th, 24:46.5) rounded out the scorers for the Bruins. UCLA men placed fifth overall in the field of 26 teams.
Senior Emma Tavella finished as the Bruins top scorer once again, completing the 6k course in 21:12.9 for a 15th-place finish. Freshman Kaho Cichon was the second scorer for UCLA, running a 22:00.2 for 65th place. Senior Gwyn George and junior Ashley Johnson found each other late in the race and displayed strong pack running down the homestretch for 93rd and 94th in the race. Angelina Shandro was the fifth scorer for the Bruins, running a 22:46.9 in the pre-nationals race.

Highlander Invitational Results
The UCLA women ran in strong packs to pull away with a 3rd-place finish in Riverside, Calif., on Saturday morning. In a field of 26 teams, the Bruins displayed strong performances to outrun conference foes Arizona and Colorado in the invitational. Senior Claire Selleck and sophomore Anna Weirich crossed first for the Bruins, finishing in 12th and 13th, respectively. Senior Sophia Hoelzel and freshman Annika Salz came in as UCLA's third and fourth scorers with 32nd- and 34th-place finishes on the day. Senior Annabelle Werner (38th, 21:15.9) was just seconds behind and finished as the Bruins' final scoring runner. Carly Corsinita and Miliana Perez also finished the race as UCLA's sixth and seventh runners.
The Bruin men also saw success in the UC Riverside-hosted invitational, placing 6th as a team in a field of 25 teams. Senior Mason Ratkovich (20th, 24:19.2) and junior Anthony Stone (22nd, 24:19.9) paced the UCLA runners as the Bruins first two scorers. Sophomore Ajani Salcido wasn't far behind, finishing in 29th with a 24:34.2. Conor Gibson (42nd) and Chris Chavez (76th) were the Bruins' final two runners.
