Cal Heads To ITA Super Regionals

Oct 19, 2022
Lucas Magnaudet will compete in singles for the Bears at super regionals.

BERKELEY – Several members of the California men's tennis team will compete in the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships from Friday through Monday at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Center. Alex Chang, Derrick Chen, Ryder Jackson, John Kim, Lucas Magnaudet, Carl Emil Overbeck and Mikey Wright will represent the Golden Bears on the Farm, at which they hope to qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships in November.
At super regionals, Cal has two pairs – the fourth-seeded Jackson and Overbeck as well as Kim and Wright – competing in doubles, while five Bears – the seventh-seeded Jackson, Chang, Chen, Magnaudet and Overbeck – are in the singles field. The draws for the event are available here and the Stanford live stream is located here.
Cal is led by Kris Kwinta, the Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis, and assistant coach Francis Sargeant. Both joined the Bears' staff last season.
Wright, Kim Win ITA Regional Doubles Title
Cal's fourth-seeded pair of sophomore Mikey Wright and freshman John Kim defeated Nevada's Loris Zisswiller and Satchel Benn, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7, in the doubles final of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Oct. 9 in Berkeley to qualify for the super regional doubles main draw.
Kikuchi Reaches Singles Final At KPSF Open
Cal's Yuta Kikuchi capped an excellent run in the annual KPSF Open with an appearance in the final on Sunday at the Goldman Tennis Center, with the Golden Bear falling to pro player Govind Nanda, 6-4, 6-1. The Golden Bears had a strong showing overall in the outdoor 40K tournament, with six current Cal men's tennis players – Kikuchi, Alex Chang, John Kim, Lucas Magnaudet, Carl Emil Overbeck and Mikey Wright – along with alumnus Sean Hill competing in Golden Gate Park.
This marked the second time this fall that Kikuchi reached a final in San Francisco, as he paired with Overbeck to repeat as the Battle in the Bay Classic doubles champions on Sept. 25.
Poll Position
Cal boasts a pair of ITA preseason rankings, with Yuta Kikuchi at No. 62 in singles and the pair of sophomore Carl Emil Overbeck and newcomer Siddhant Banthia – a graduate transfer from Wake Forest – ranked No. 30 in doubles.
Next Time
Yuta Kikuchi and Siddhant Banthia will play in a 15K Norman tournament from Oct. 24-30 in Oklahoma, and the two may also compete in a 15K tournament from Oct. 31-Nov. 6 in Ithaca, New York. To close the fall half of the season, those Bears who qualify through super regionals or as at-large entrants will play in the ITA National Fall Championships, slated for Nov. 2-6 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
