Sophie Shorter-Robinson to Join Water Polo in the Spring

Oct 20, 2022

TEMPE, Ariz– Head Coach Petra Pardi has announced that center, Sophie Shorter-Robinson, will join Sun Devil Water Polo as a freshman in the Spring to compete in the 2022-23 season. Shorter Robinson is highly decorated in the New Zealand circuit, and comes to Tempe as a freshman with years of experience on New Zealand's Junior and Senior Women's teams.

"We've had our eyes on her for a while. When she made the NZL Senior team for the world championship this summer, I booked my ticket to go watch her," said Head Coach Petra Pardi. "She's a strong center with a very high ceiling, and a competitive attitude so it was a no-brainer she'd be a great fit for the program," after graduate center Amira Van Buren graduated last year which left a need for center depth.

Shorter-Robinson studied at Diocesan School For Girls in Auckland, and has been a member of Marist Water Polo Club since 2022 after she spent four years playing club with Atlantis City. As a member of New Zealand Senior National Team Shorter-Robinson is a two-time national league gold medalist. In the FINA circuit, Shorter-Robinson competed in the U20 World Championships in 2019 and the Senior World Championships this year.

Excited to join the squad in Tempe, Shorter-Robinson speaks to her excitement, "I am really excited to be coming to Tempe as from what I have seen and heard, it looks like an amazing city. The environment and culture of the team looks really positive which ultimately drew me to choosing ASU."

While competing for her school In 2021 she was the College Sport Female Young Sport's Person of the Year for water polo, the College Sport Nominee for Overall Female Young Sport's Person of the Year, and earned The Del Hooper Cup Award.
