Cal Earns 2-2 Draw At SDSU

Oct 23, 2022
Fahmi Ibrahim scored a late PK to give Cal the 2-2 tie.

SAN DIEGO – Fahmi Ibrahim scored his team-high sixth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 87th minute, and the Cal men's soccer team came away with a point after a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon at San Diego State.

The Golden Bears have a 3-6-5 record (1-4-2 in the Pac-12), while SDSU is 5-7-3 (1-4-2 Pac-12).

The Bears took a 1-0 lead when defender Kevin Carmichael scored his first career goal in the 34th minute. A Cal free kick set up the goal, after an SDSU player fouled Ibrahim as he dribbled outside the Aztecs' box. Ibrahim took the free kick, sending it deep into the box. The ball was loose, and Carmichael pounced on it to score.

Cal led 1-0 at halftime.

In the 71st minute, SDSU's Kyle Colonna scored on a header to tie the game at 1-1. San Diego State scored again in the 75th minute, as C.J. Fodrey hit a rocket from the edge of the Cal box, and the Aztecs led, 2-1.

Cal fought back to grab the equalizer. In the 87th minute, a Bears' corner kick led to an SDSU handball in the box. Ibrahim stepped up to convert his second PK of the year, and the teams soon settled for the 2-2 tie.

"The tie's a little bit of a disappointment given the importance of getting three points for us," Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said. "But it's huge getting a point going into the last three games. I'm proud the guys didn't stop fighting and came back down 2-1 to get the tying goal. It showed some character.

"It's super exciting anytime a player gets his first goal, and Kevin's goal gave us a little bit of momentum. Hopefully we'll continue to score more on set pieces. And we were putting them under a lot of pressure late, and we earned that PK. We'll continue to work on playing a complete match and getting multiple goals in a game."

The Bears return to Berkeley to host their next two games – Thursday vs. No. 1 Washington and Sunday, Oct. 30, vs. Oregon State. Cal closes the regular season when the Bears host No. 5 Stanford on Nov. 12 at Edwards Stadium.
