RICHMOND, Va. – Bringing a close to its non-conference slate in style, Stanford field hockey rallied with two fourth quarter goals to defeat Richmond, 2-1, on Sunday morning at Crenshaw Field. The Cardinal improves to 7-7 this season.

Caroline Guden and Haley Mossmer scored for the Cardinal, their first and sixth of the year, respectively. Cara Sambeth added an assist for the second game in a row, while Daisy Ford made one save in goal to earn the win.

"It was great to come out on top today," said head coach Roz Ellis. "I was very impressed with the team to rattle back in the 4th quarter. Scrappy wins are valuable and teach us a lot about our determination."

Stanford outshot the Spiders 15-5 and earned seven corners against just three for the home side. The teams combined for just five total shots over the first 30 minutes, ending the first half in a scoreless tie.

The Cardinal peppered the Richmond net with seven shots in the third quarter, but Richmond struck first with a deflected goal coming off a penalty corner.

Guden restored the tie in the 47th minute, scoring off her own penalty corner with a sharp shot into the bottom left corner.

Stanford continued its attack on the Spider defense, and was rewarded with just 1:55 left to play as Mossmer lobbed a rebounded shot across the goal line. The score was her fourth in the last five games.

Stanford resumes America East play on Friday, Oct. 28 at Maine. The action will be broadcast on AmericaEast.tv.
