Utah Sweeps Oregon State Sunday in Corvallis
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Utah Volleyball returned to the win column on Sunday afternoon as the Utes cruised past the Oregon State Beavers in straight sets (25-17, 25-15, 26-24) at Gill Coliseum. Led by Madelyn Robinson's 18 kills on .429 hitting, Utah recorded a .346 hitting percentage in the match to mark its best efficiency in a true road match this season.
Utah started the match hitting at a blazing .448 clip in the opening set after recording 17 kills with just four hitting errors. Robinson set the tone early with eight kills on .583 hitting in the first set against the Beavers. Utah and Oregon State went back and forth to start, however, a 7-0 run from the Utes broke open the set and extended the lead to 21-12. The large run for Utah would be enough to maintain control of the set as it would eventually win 25-17. Utah also put up five blocks in the opening set.
In the second set, Utah picked up right where it left off as an 8-1 run left Oregon State behind 9-3 early on. Later leading 15-10, Utah managed to score seven of the next eight points, which included a pair of aces from Vanessa Ramirez, to lead 22-11. Utah would win the dominant frame 25-15 with four Utes recording at least two kills in the evenly spread offense.
The start of the third set played to be back and forth much like the first set until Utah used a 6-1 run to gain some separation at 17-14. Despite holding a slight advantage, Utah allowed Oregon State to chip away at the lead and eventually tie the set 20-20. Attack errors pushed Utah ahead by two points, but Oregon State responded to tie the set 22-22.
After a kill from Robinson, the Beavers managed to score back-to-back points and earn set point. Out of a timeout from the Utes, Robinson posted her seventh kill of the third set to even the frame, while Lauren Jardine collected consecutive kills to earn the 26-24 win in the third set and complete the Utah sweep.
Robinson's 18 kills wrapped up a weekend where she posted 6.57 kills per set and hit .354 over the two matches. Also with a huge performance on Sunday for the Utes was Ramirez, who posted a match-high 18 digs and three aces.
Jardine and Allie Olsen each chipped in eight kills, while KJ Burgess and Amelia Van Der Werff added five kills each. Olsen, Burgess and Van Der Werff all hit above .455 in the match. Olsen and Burgess led the blocking efforts with five blocks each as well. Emily Smith recorded 22 assists in the match, while Grace Hammond added a season-high 18 assists. Kamry Bailey also posted nine digs.
